Make a Splash with a Cool Pool Party!

As long as you have access to a pool – whether it be a community, private or personal swimming pool – you can have the coolest party around! Here are some tips to plan a fun pool party this summer.

The Invitations

Start the planning with fun invitations. You can easily print them at home using a summery template (like these adorable DIY invites from Domestically Swanky Designs) or send them by email using an online service, such as Evite. In addition to the date and time, remind your guests to bring bathing suits, towels and sunscreen.

You also might want to think about having a rain plan. If you’re having the party somewhere with additional event spaces, ask them if you can move the food and fun (and maybe some of the games) indoors in the event of bad weather.

The Playlist

Pick fun, beachy music that will appeal to everyone. Fill your playlist with classics like the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffet, or tune your phone and speakers to today’s hits.

The Set Up

Make sure to have plenty of sunscreen on hand for those guests who forget theirs and lots of beverages (ice water, iced tea, lemonade, etc.) to keep everyone hydrated.

Have some umbrellas or a tent if your pool doesn’t already provide some shady areas.

Pick up some fun pool toys (rafts, beach balls and water guns for example) – you’ll find that everyone will be in a playful mood on a sunny day. It’s also a good idea to come up with a few pool games to have on hand.

The Favors

If you decide to give favors, cheap flip flops in assorted sizes and colors make a fun favor. You can also have each guest take home one of the pool toys (beach balls, mini water guns, etc.) – not only will they remember the fabulous party you threw next time they use them, but you won’t be left with tons of pool toys to store at the end of the day!

The Menu

Make sure you have a way to keep your food cool or have items that won’t spoil if they sit outside in the sun. Frozen drinks, such as pina coladas and daiquiris (nonalcoholic versions for the kids, of course) are always a big hit. Want to put a new twist on these classic drinks? Pour them into popsicle molds for a refreshing treat! Click on the picture below for a Pina Colada Posicle recipe!

A cookout is also a fun way to feed your pool party guests. Light up the grill and cook an assortment of burgers, hot dogs and bratwurst. Don’t forget to have an assortment of buns and condiments on hand.

Why not take it one step further and have a hot dog bar!? Grill different types of dogs (including veggie dogs) and make sure to set out tons of toppings including ketchup, relish, mustard, sauerkraut, onions, peppers, and mushrooms.

The Decor

If you decide to party into the night, make sure to have some fun colored lights. Tiki torches can create a tropical atmosphere, but if you’re on a budge, dig out some Christmas tree lights and string them up around the pool.
